Local SEO in Lagos: How to Get Found by Customers Near You
When someone in Lekki searches for a dentist, a caterer or a solar installer, Google shows them a map and three businesses. Local SEO is the work of being one of the three.

Local SEO in Lagos is the work of appearing on Google Search and Maps when people in your part of the city look for what you sell.
Key takeaways
- Local SEO is the work of appearing when people nearby search for what you sell, especially in Google's map results.
- A complete, accurate and active Google Business Profile is the single most important piece.
- Reviews, consistent business details across the web, and pages written for specific areas do most of the remaining work.
- In Lagos, think in neighbourhoods. People search for Ikeja, Lekki, Surulere and Yaba, not only for "Lagos".
Local SEO, short for local search engine optimisation, is the practice of improving how a business appears in search results for people in a particular place. It covers the map results, the business panel that appears beside a search, and the ordinary listings beneath them when the search has local intent.
For any Lagos business that serves customers in person or within a delivery area, such as clinics, restaurants, salons, schools, law firms, repair services, estate agents and installers, it is usually the most cost-effective marketing available. The people searching are close by and already looking for what you offer.
How local search works
When Google believes a search has local intent, for example "pharmacy near me" or "wedding caterer Ikeja", it shows a map with a short list of businesses, often three. This is commonly called the local pack. Below it come the normal website results.
Google has said that local results are based mainly on three things.
- Relevance. How well your business matches what was searched.
- Distance. How far you are from the searcher or from the place named in the search.
- Prominence. How well known and well regarded the business is, judged from reviews, links, mentions and your wider presence online.
You cannot change distance, except by where you operate. Relevance and prominence are where the work is done.
Start with your Google Business Profile
Google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps. If you do only one thing from this guide, complete it properly.
- Claim and verify the listing. Search for your business on Google Maps. If it exists, claim it. If not, create it. Verification is usually by video, phone or post.
- Use your real business name. Do not stuff it with keywords such as "Best Cheap Plumber Lekki". It breaks Google's rules and can get the listing suspended.
- Choose the most accurate primary category. This has a strong effect on which searches you appear for. Add secondary categories only where they truly apply.
- Enter a precise address or service area. If customers visit you, pin the exact location. If you travel to customers, hide the address and set the areas you serve.
- Add phone number, website and opening hours, including public holidays.
- Write a clear description of what you do, for whom, and where.
- List your services or products with short descriptions and prices where you can.
- Upload real photographs: the outside of the premises so people can find it, the inside, the team, and the work.
Lagos addresses can be imprecise, and many streets are poorly mapped. Drop the pin yourself, check it on a phone, and add a landmark in your description: "opposite the filling station", "inside the plaza beside the bank". It reduces lost customers and missed deliveries.

Keep the profile active
A profile that was filled in once and forgotten loses ground to one that is maintained. Build a small routine.
- Post updates every week or two: offers, new stock, events, finished jobs.
- Add new photographs every month.
- Answer the questions people ask on the listing, and add your own common questions with answers.
- Turn on messaging only if someone will reply quickly.
- Correct the hours whenever they change. Few things annoy a customer more than driving through Lagos traffic to a closed door.
Reviews: the strongest local signal you control
Reviews influence both where you rank and whether anyone chooses you once you appear. A business with many recent, detailed reviews will usually beat a closer competitor with none.
How to get more reviews
- Ask every satisfied customer, at the moment they are happiest: on delivery, at the end of a job, at the till.
- Make it effortless. Google gives each profile a short review link. Send it by WhatsApp or print it as a QR code at the counter.
- Ask staff to make the request part of closing each sale.
- Follow up once, politely, if they agreed but forgot.
What not to do
- Do not buy reviews or write your own. Patterns are detectable, and the penalty is losing the listing.
- Do not offer payment or discounts in exchange for positive reviews. It is against Google's policies.
- Do not ask twenty friends to post on the same afternoon.
Reply to every review
Thank people for good reviews in a sentence or two. Respond to bad ones calmly: acknowledge the problem, say what you have done or will do, and offer a way to continue the conversation privately. Future customers read your reply as closely as the complaint.
A calm reply to a bad review often sells better than ten good reviews with no reply at all.
Keep your details identical everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should be written the same way on your website, your Google profile, your social media pages and any directories. Search engines use these mentions, often called citations, to confirm that a business is real and where it is.
Check and correct the places you are already listed, then add the ones that matter: Facebook and Instagram business pages, Apple Maps, Bing Places, reputable Nigerian business directories, and any directories specific to your trade. A handful of accurate listings is worth more than a hundred careless ones.
Find the words Lagos customers use
Local keyword research is simple in principle. Combine what you do with where you do it, and check what people actually type.
- Service plus area: "dentist in Ikeja", "event hall Lekki Phase 1", "car AC repair Surulere".
- "Near me" searches, which Google resolves using the searcher's location.
- Questions: "how much is teeth whitening in Lagos", "where to buy inverter batteries in Ikeja".
- Local wording. People may say "mechanic" where a company would write "auto service centre", or "POP ceiling" where a designer writes "plaster ceiling".
Type your main service into Google and note the suggestions and the "People also ask" questions. Look at what your Google Business Profile reports under the searches that found you. Ask your staff which words customers use on the phone. Our guide to SEO in Nigeria covers keyword research in more depth.

Make your website locally relevant
Your website supports the map listing and competes in the ordinary results beneath it.
- Put your name, address and phone number in the footer of every page, in text, not as an image.
- Write a proper contact page with an embedded map, directions from well-known landmarks, parking information and opening hours.
- Mention your area naturally in the page title, the main heading and the opening paragraph of your key pages.
- Create a page for each main service. One page that lists everything ranks for nothing in particular.
- Create a page for each area you truly serve, if you have more than one branch or deliver across the city. Each needs content specific to that area: the address or coverage, landmarks, delivery times, photographs and reviews from customers there. Copying one page and swapping the place name does not work.
- Add local business structured data so search engines can read your details reliably.
- Make it fast on a phone. Most local searches happen on mobile, often on a weak connection.
Think in neighbourhoods
Lagos is a very large city, and crossing it can take hours. People search for and choose businesses within their own part of it. Someone on the Island rarely wants a provider in Ikorodu, however good.
That shapes the strategy. Decide which areas you can serve well and concentrate on them. Use the names people use: Lekki, Ajah, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Yaba, Surulere, Ikeja, Maryland, Gbagada, Festac, Ikorodu. Where it fits your business, mention estates, markets and landmarks. If you have a second branch, give it its own Google Business Profile and its own page on the website.
Earn local links and mentions
Links from other local websites raise prominence. Realistic sources for a Lagos business include:
- Suppliers and partners who list their stockists or installers.
- Trade associations and chambers of commerce.
- Local news sites and blogs covering your area or industry.
- Events, schools or community projects you sponsor.
- Customers who are businesses themselves and publish supplier or project pages.
Avoid paying for bulk links from unrelated websites. They rarely help and sometimes harm.
Connect search to WhatsApp and calls
In Lagos, a local search usually ends in a call or a WhatsApp message, not a web form. Make both effortless. Use a number that is answered during the hours you publish. Add a click-to-chat link on the website. Agree who replies, and how fast. A profile that ranks first and then ignores messages for six hours is simply advertising for the competitor ranked second.
How to measure local SEO
- Google Business Profile insights: searches, views, calls, direction requests and website clicks.
- Search Console: which local queries bring impressions and clicks to your site.
- Review count and average rating, tracked monthly.
- Rankings for a short list of service-plus-area searches, checked from the areas you serve, since results differ by location.
- Enquiries and sales that came from search. Ask new customers how they found you and record the answer.

A 30-day local SEO plan
Week one. Claim, verify and complete the Google Business Profile. Fix the map pin. Add ten good photographs.
Week two. Correct your name, address and phone number on the website and every existing listing. Add the missing major listings.
Week three. Start asking every customer for a review using the short link. Reply to all existing reviews. Update the contact page and add the area to your main page titles.
Week four. Publish or improve one page per main service. Post the first update on the profile. Set up a simple monthly record of calls, direction requests and reviews.
After that, the work is maintenance: reviews every week, an update and new photographs every month, and a new useful page whenever you can.
Common mistakes
- An unclaimed or half-finished Google Business Profile.
- Keyword-stuffed business names.
- Different phone numbers and addresses in different places.
- No reviews, or reviews left unanswered.
- One thin page trying to rank for every service and every area.
- Wrong opening hours.
- Listing a virtual or fake address to appear in an area where you have no presence.
- Ranking well and then answering enquiries slowly.
Local SEO in Lagos: frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take in Lagos?
A completed profile and a steady flow of reviews can improve visibility within a few weeks. Competitive categories in busy areas take several months of consistent work.
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing the listing costs nothing. Be cautious of anyone who claims you must pay Google to appear on Maps.
Can I rank in an area where I have no office?
It is difficult in the map results, because distance matters. You can set a service area and publish helpful pages for the areas you cover, but a real presence nearby is the strongest factor.
Do I need a website for local SEO?
A profile alone can bring calls, but a website strengthens relevance and prominence, lets you rank in the results below the map, and gives customers the detail they need before contacting you.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no fixed number. Aim to have more recent, genuine reviews than the businesses currently shown for your main searches, and keep them coming steadily.
