Google Ads in Nigeria: A Beginner’s Guide for Business Owners
Google Ads puts your business in front of people at the moment they search for what you sell. It can also empty a budget in days if it is set up carelessly. Here is how to start properly.

Google Ads in Nigeria lets a business pay to appear at the moment someone searches for what it sells, and to be charged only when that person clicks.
Key takeaways
- Google Ads lets you pay to appear when people search for specific words, and you are charged when someone clicks.
- Start with a Search campaign aimed at people ready to buy, using tightly chosen keywords and locations.
- Set up conversion tracking before spending anything, including calls and WhatsApp clicks.
- The landing page and your speed of response decide whether clicks become customers.
Google Ads is Google's advertising platform. It lets a business show adverts on Google's search results, on YouTube, on Google Maps and across millions of partner websites and apps. The best-known format is the search advert: a text listing marked "Sponsored" that appears above or below the ordinary results when someone searches for chosen words.
For Nigerian businesses whose customers actively look for what they sell, such as clinics, schools, solar installers, lawyers, logistics firms, software companies and online shops, it is one of the quickest ways to generate enquiries. Unlike SEO, results can begin on the day the campaign goes live. Unlike SEO, they stop when you stop paying.
How Google Ads works
You choose the searches you want to appear for, write adverts, set a budget, and say what you are willing to pay. Each time someone searches, Google runs an instant auction among advertisers targeting that search. Your position depends on two things: your bid, and the quality and relevance of your advert and landing page. A more relevant advertiser can appear above a higher bidder and pay less per click.
In most campaign types you pay only when someone clicks. This is called pay-per-click, or PPC. What a click costs varies enormously by industry, competition and location.
The main campaign types
| Type | Where adverts appear | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Google search results | Capturing people actively looking for your product or service. Where most businesses should begin. |
| Performance Max | All Google channels, largely automated | Accounts with reliable conversion tracking and enough data. |
| Shopping | Product listings with image and price | Online shops, where supported for your market and product feed. |
| Display | Banners on websites and apps | Awareness and reminding past visitors. |
| Video | YouTube | Awareness, demonstrations and storytelling. |
| App | Search, Play Store, YouTube and more | Driving app installs. |
If you are new, start with Search. It reaches people with clear intent and gives you the most control. Add other types once you know your numbers.
Before you spend: four things to prepare
- A clear goal. Phone calls, WhatsApp chats, form enquiries, bookings or purchases. Pick one primary action.
- A page worth landing on. Fast on a phone, focused on one offer, with an obvious next step.
- Conversion tracking. So that Google and you can see which clicks produced results.
- A way to respond quickly. A person assigned to answer calls and messages during the hours your adverts run.
Skipping any of these is the most common reason campaigns disappoint.

Setting up the account and billing
Create the account at ads.google.com with a Google account the business owns, not an employee's or an agency's personal login. When Google offers a simplified "Smart" setup, look for the option to switch to expert mode, which gives full control.
For Nigerian advertisers, billing deserves care. Check which billing currencies and payment methods are currently offered for accounts based in Nigeria, and remember that the currency usually cannot be changed after the account is created. Card limits on international transactions imposed by Nigerian banks can cause payments to fail, which pauses your adverts. Use a card that reliably supports such payments, keep it funded, and monitor billing alerts. Complete advertiser verification promptly when Google asks for it.
Choosing keywords
Keywords are the words and phrases that trigger your adverts. Good ones show intent to buy.
- High intent: "solar installation company Lagos", "buy inverter battery Abuja", "family lawyer in Ikeja", "school management software Nigeria".
- Low intent: "what is solar energy", "how do inverters work". These are informational and usually better served by articles than by adverts.
Use Google's Keyword Planner to see estimated search volumes and bid ranges for Nigeria. Start with a small set of specific phrases instead of hundreds.
Match types
Match types control how closely a search must resemble your keyword.
- Exact match shows your advert for that phrase and close variants. Most control, least volume.
- Phrase match shows it for searches that include the meaning of your phrase.
- Broad match shows it for anything Google considers related. Most volume, least control.
Beginners are safest with exact and phrase match. Broad match can spend quickly on loosely related searches unless paired with good conversion data.
Negative keywords
Negative keywords stop your adverts appearing for searches you do not want. Common ones include "free", "jobs", "salary", "course", "how to", "DIY" and "meaning". Add them from the start, and review the search terms report weekly to find more. This single habit saves more money than any other.
Targeting location and language
Target only the places you can serve: specific states, cities or a radius around your premises. A Lagos clinic gains nothing from clicks in Kano.
Check the location options carefully. Choose the setting that targets people who are in, or regularly in, your chosen locations, not everyone who shows interest in them. Otherwise your budget may go to people abroad who are merely searching about Nigeria. If you do want the diaspora, target them deliberately in a separate campaign.
Structuring campaigns
Keep it simple and tidy. Create one campaign per main service or product line. Inside each, create ad groups of closely related keywords, each with adverts written for that theme and a landing page that matches. A person who searches for "wedding photographer Lagos" should see an advert about wedding photography in Lagos and land on a page about exactly that.
Writing adverts
Search adverts are assembled from the headlines and descriptions you supply. Write several of each.
- Include the keyword in at least one headline so the advert matches the search.
- State what makes you worth choosing: price, speed, guarantee, experience, location.
- Be specific. "Installed in 48 hours" is stronger than "fast service".
- Include a call to action: call now, get a quote, book online, chat on WhatsApp.
- Do not promise what the page cannot deliver.
Add assets, formerly called extensions: sitelinks to other pages, callouts, your location, a call button and prices. They make the advert larger and more useful at no extra cost per click.
The advert earns the click. The landing page earns the customer. Most wasted budgets fail at the second step.

The landing page
Do not send paid traffic to your homepage unless it is built for that one purpose. Send each ad group to a page that repeats the promise in the advert, explains the offer clearly, shows proof such as reviews and photographs of real work, and makes the next step obvious with a call button, a WhatsApp button and a short form. It must load quickly on a phone. Our guide to building a landing page that converts explains the structure.
Conversion tracking
A conversion is the action you care about. Without tracking, Google's automated bidding has nothing to learn from, and you cannot tell which keywords pay.
- Track form submissions and purchases through Google Analytics or the Google tag.
- Track clicks on phone numbers and WhatsApp buttons as conversions.
- Use call assets and call reporting where available.
- For shops, pass the order value so you can see return on spend.
- Record, in your own sales notes, which enquiries came from adverts and which became customers. Many Nigerian sales close in a chat or a call, outside what the platform can see.
Budgets and bidding
You set an average daily budget for each campaign. Google may spend more on some days and less on others, balancing over the month.
How much is enough? Work backwards. If the Keyword Planner suggests clicks in your category cost a certain amount, and you expect perhaps one in twenty clicks to enquire, you can estimate a cost per enquiry. Choose a budget that buys enough clicks, ideally a few hundred over the first month, to learn something. A budget that buys three clicks a day teaches you very little.
For bidding, a common path is to begin with a strategy that maximises clicks with a cap on the cost per click, then move to one that maximises conversions once you have recorded a reasonable number. Automated bidding works well with good data and badly without it.
Agency or freelancer management fees are separate from what you pay Google. Our digital marketing service starts from ₦350,000 per month, with advertising spend additional and paid directly to the platform.
What to do in the first month
- Daily in week one: check that adverts are approved and running, payments are succeeding, and conversions are being recorded.
- Twice a week: read the search terms report and add negative keywords.
- Weekly: pause keywords that spend without converting, and move budget toward those that do.
- Fortnightly: test a new headline or description against the current ones.
- Monthly: review cost per enquiry and, more importantly, cost per customer.
Avoid changing everything every day. The system needs time and data to settle after each significant change.

Mistakes that waste money
- No conversion tracking.
- Broad match keywords with no negatives.
- Targeting all of Nigeria, or the whole world, by default.
- Sending clicks to a slow or generic homepage.
- Running adverts around the clock when nobody answers the phone at night.
- Leaving the Search campaign opted in to the Display network without meaning to.
- Accepting every automated recommendation without understanding it.
- Letting an agency own the account, so that the history is lost if you part ways.
- Judging success by clicks instead of customers.
Google Ads or SEO?
They work best together. Adverts deliver immediate visibility and quick feedback on which searches convert. SEO takes longer but keeps bringing visitors without a cost per click. A sensible approach is to use adverts to generate enquiries now and to learn which keywords matter, while investing in SEO for the long term.
Google Ads in Nigeria: frequently asked questions
How much does Google Ads cost in Nigeria?
There is no fixed price. You set your own budget, and cost per click varies by industry and competition. Use Keyword Planner to see estimates for your keywords, and start with a budget that buys enough clicks to learn from.
Does Google Ads work for small businesses?
Yes, particularly local services with clear search demand. Tight targeting, a focused landing page and fast follow-up matter more than a large budget.
How quickly will I see results?
Adverts can appear within hours of approval. Expect two to four weeks of adjustment before performance is stable enough to judge.
Can I run Google Ads myself?
You can. Learn the basics, start small and check the account often. Many businesses bring in a specialist once spend grows, because mistakes become expensive.
Why are my adverts not showing?
Common causes are a failed payment, adverts still under review or disapproved, a budget or bid that is too low, very narrow targeting, or low keyword search volume.
